Personally I think that illustrates very poor and uncreative game design. The DLC campaigns solve the first and most especially the last problem, and are much more fun as a result. And finally, less-than-inspired scenario design. That was the fun part about the AoW1 campaign: you could design your own leader, choose your own magic spheres, and replay it with an entirely different leader if you wanted at a later date. As Nayred says: playing with race/class/specialisation combos you can't pick. Too many heroes who are boring and do not influence the story, and obviously were only added because they wanted to show off all the classes Without the difficulty factor, the main annoyances for me are:

Or more likely, I'd just have turned down the difficulty to "easy." More fun than restarting, I think. I'd played the older AoWs a lot, so didn't find them very difficult, but if I'd been new to the series I imagine I too would have been frustrated. I think the issue is more that the campaigns are balanced for people who are already quite familiar with the game. And as long as you can avoid casualties in tactical battles. You do generally have to attack and expand quickly and use your heroes a lot, and some of the later scenarios can get rather tedious in that regard, but in general they're not -that- difficult as long as you don't sit around and turtle. Of course, I did first play on normal difficulty rather than hard. When I first got the game, I never had to restart any scenario. I agree that the campaigns are not the strongest aspect of the game, but you do not *need* to restart them, or play by trial and error, or bum-rush the enemy.

The maps have a whole bunch of places to explore, events and sidequest things that you just have to ignore completely right from the start.
